ORDER OF WORSHIP |
OPENING HYMN – “Come, Holy Ghost” 176
Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord!
May all your graces be outpoured
On each believer’s mind and heart;
Your fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of your light
In holy faith your church unite From ev’ry land and ev’ry tongue; This to your praise, O Lord our God, be sung: Alleluia! Alleluia!
Come, Holy Light, Guide divine,
And cause your Word of life to shine.
Teach us to know our God aright And call him Father with delight. From ev’ry error keep us free; Let none but Christ our Master be That we in living faith abide,
In him, our Lord, with all our might confide. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Come, holy Fire, Comfort true; Grant us the will your work to do
And in your service to abide; Let trials turn us not aside.
Lord, by your pow’r prepare each heart,
And to our weakness strength impart
That bravely here we may contend,
Through life and death to you, our Lord, ascend. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Martin Luther, 1483-1546
Pastor: We worship here and throughout our lives in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
P: The LORD be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Come, Holy Spirit,
C: Fill us with your presence and love! Alleluia!
M: People of God by the inner working of the Holy Spirit: Before we praise our Triune God for working faith in our hearts and keeping us in him, let us remember why Jesus had to die —to pay for our sins. Therefore let us confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son X and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
HYMN: “Glorify Thy Name”
(Short intro)
1) Father,
2) Jesus,
3) Spirit,
We love you; we worship and adore you,
Glorify thy name in all the earth.
Glorify thy name, glorify thy name,
Glorify thy name in all the earth.

CHILDREN’S ADDRESS & SUNDAY SCHOOL

(The Christian Church has never been the same –God the Holy Spirit was poured out on the early church and as they proclaimed Christ crucified and risen, the Church grew.)
Epistle Lesson –Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost came, they (the disciples) were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard the sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs –we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These are not drunk as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
(Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as our Counselor, as we heard last Sunday. May he continue to guide us daily!)
Gospel Lesson –John 16:5-11
“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment; in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”
Prayer of the Day
P: Holy Spirit, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
(Be seated)
HYMN – “Oh, Give Us Homes” (to CW 415)
Oh, give us homes built firmly on the Savior,
Where Christ is head and counselor and guide,
Where ev’ry child is taught his love and favor
And gives his heart to Christ, the crucified.
How sweet to know that, though our footsteps waver,
A faithful Lord is walking by our side!
Oh, give us homes where Christ is Lord and master,
The Bible read, the precious hymns still sung,
Where prayer comes first in peace or in disaster
And praise is natural speech to ev’ry tongue,
Where mountains move before a faith that’s vaster
And Christ sufficient is for old and young.
O Lord, our God, our homes are yours forever!
We trust to you their problems, toil and care;
Their bonds of love no enemy can sever
If you are always Lord and master there.
Lord, be the center of our least endeavor;
Lord, be our guest, our hearts and homes to share.
Barbara B. Hart, 1985
Proverbs 18:22 –He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.
Proverbs 19:13,14 –A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
Proverbs 21:9 & 25:24 –Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
Proverbs 21:19 –Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.

HYMN – “Now Thank We All Our God” 610
Now thank we all our God With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done, In whom his world rejoices,
Who from our mother’s arms Has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love And still is ours today.
Oh, may this bounteous God Through all our life be near us,
With ever-joyful hearts And blessed peace to cheer us
And keep us in his grace And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all ills In this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God The Father now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God, Whom earth and heav’n adore!
For thus it was, is now, And shall be evermore.
Martin Rinkart, 1586-1649
The members & friends of Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran give an offering to the Lord in gratitude for what he has done for us in dying for our sins and rising again, and for continually helping us.
We do not expect you, our guests, to help support our ministry. So feel free to pass the plate by as it comes to you.
PRAYER
LORD’S PRAYER (Sung) – to CW 240
Our Father in heaven, we hallow your name.
May your kingdom holy on earth be the same.
Oh, give to us daily our portion of bread.
It is from your bounty that all must be fed.
Forgive our transgressions and teach us to know
That humble compassion which pardons each foe.
Keep us from temptation, from evil and sin.
For yours is the glory forever! Amen.
Sarah J. Hale

THE SACRAMENT
(Our Lord Jesus has given us a holy supper in which we receive his true body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins and strengthening of faith.
In this supper we celebrate the gift of his redemption, we bear witness to the fellowship we share with the Lord and with each other,
and we proclaim his death until he returns.)
P: The Lord be with you.
C(spoken): And also with you.
P: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, he empowered his Church to be witnesses of Christ to the ends of the earth. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever.
HYMN: 195 -v. 4
(Short Intro)
Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty,
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Reginald Heber, 1783-1826
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: Amen.

Distribution of Holy Communion
“Thank the Lord” –CW p. 36
Thank the Lord and sing his praise.
Tell ev’ryone what he has done.
Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear his name.
He renews his promises and leads his people forth in joy
With shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia! Alleluia!
PRAYER OF THANKS
P: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
C: And his mercy endures forever.
P: O God the Father, source of all goodness, in your loving kindness you sent your Son to share our humanity. We thank you that through him you have given us pardon and peace in this sacrament. We also pray that you will not forsake us but will rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit so that we willingly serve you day after day; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
BLESSING (Cong.: Amen.)
Lord of the home, the Son you love
Received a mother’s tender care,
A father’s strength like yours above,
A home with warmth and kindness there.
Help us, O Lord, our homes to make
Your Holy Spirit’s dwelling place;
Our hands and hearts’ devotion take
To be the servants of your grace.
We pray that all who with us dwell
Your love and joy and peace may know.
And while our lips your praises tell,
May faithful lives your glory show.
Teach us to keep our homes so fair
That, were our Lord a child once more,
He might be glad our hearth to share
And find a welcome at our door.
Lord, may your Spirit sanctify Each household duty we fulfill.
May we our Savior glorify With glad obedience to your will.
Albert F. Bayly, 1901-1984
